There are a number of historic sites in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China, but none quite like the Bao’en Temple Pagoda. Also known as Beisi Pagoda or “North Temple Pagoda,” this massive, ancient Buddhist temple sits just north of the heart of the city. Its sheath-like appearance makes it look like a mythological sword jutting out of the earth. If you’re looking for notable things to do in Suzhou, Boa’en Temple is a free, must-see site. As a bonus, it’s located not far from the famous Guanqian Jie shopping area. It’s also a skip away from historic Pingjiang Road.

Bao'en Temple Pagoda

The Pagoda is a fascinating place to take in local customs, and see spectacular architectural feats. Sitting over 249 feet tall, it looms brilliantly above onlookers. You can visit the Bao’en Temple for a taste of architecture from the Song Dynasty (1131-1162 A.D.). Full-disclosure, this is still a working monastery, and different religious ceremonies are still conducted there. According to China.org.cn, ” It is said to have first been constructed during the Three Kingdoms period by the order of Sun Quan, the king of Wu, who prayed for the happiness of his mother.”

While the actual Pagoda is the focal point of the monastery, there are actually several surrounding temples on the site grounds. In addition, there are historic markers, intricate stonework, and a gift shop dotted around. Several Bhuddist relics and shrines are also scattered about.

Visitors should note that as a courtesy there is a dress code to adhere to for religious modesty’s sake. Short skirts and dresses are discouraged, and pants and closed-toed shoes should be worn.

The temple is a photographer’s paradise

If the pagoda itself and general curiosity weren’t enough, Bao’en is also a photographer’s paradise. The unique, but so traditionally Chinese, structures are worth the visit as well. Local flowers, trees, and other vegetation are also woven through the monastery, making for a peaceful, picturesque venture.
